Epiretinal membrane (macular pucker, gliosis, cellophane)
An epiretinal membrane is a fine cling film-like membrane that covers the retina and leads to a deterioration in vision. Patients often complain about distortions in vision.
This epiretinal membrane can be gently removed during an operation (vitrectomy - peeling).
Macular hole
A macular hole is a round gap in the central retina caused by vitreous traction. Many patients complain of a blind spot in the center of their vision. In most cases this hole can be closed with surgery (vitrectomy - peeling - gas).
Vitreous hemorrhage
A vitreous hemorrhage occurs from a leaking or ruptured blood vessel. This can have many causes. Therefore, different treatments may be necessary (observation, laser or vitrectomy)
Retinal detachment
The retina can detach in most cases due to fluid buildup through a retinal tear. Patients with severe nearsightedness (myopia) are at higher risk. If you see flashing lights, floaters, or a growing shadow, then a retinal tear or detachment could be behind it.
Retinal detachments almost always requires surgery (vitrectomy with gas or oil, or fillings)
